CHARACTER DESIGN | STORYBOARD | ILLUSTRATIONS FOR ANIMATION for the cental BANK OF RUSSIA

ANONYMOUS LOOSERS CLUB

The Bank of Russia launched the resource Fincult.info, whose goal is the formation of a financial culture of citizens.

This animation is aimed at popularization of insurance opportunities. To tell this idea, a scenario was crated that tells the stories of three characters who are personifications of three most popular insurance types: life and health insurance (Death), property insurance (Godzolla), and fires insurance (Pyromanyak). The main idea of the video is that it is impossible to negotiate with insurance event and postpone it for tomorrow, so it is better to insure yourself today. The inability of our characters to influence the lives of ordinary people makes them miserable losers.

We decided to create all the stories in different graphic styles. In this project I got the tasks of creating silhouettes of characters, doing complete character design of death, storyboarding, illustrating scenes where all the characters meet and the scenes of death memories.

DEATH

Character design
The starting point in the creation of the character became a classic for Western culture image of death which combines the black mantle, inherited from the ancient Greek personification of death - Thanatos, and the scythe from the Greek god of time Chronos.

The shape of the triangle was chosen for the silhouette of the character, which most clearly expresses the essence of the hero's hostile nature to the world around him. This form almost literally pierces the surrounding world by falling into it.

An additional element to the image of death were the bells on it's scythe. The idea of adding them was born from the fact that in Munich for more than a hundred years there was a tomb in which the person's hand was wrapped around with a cord from the bell because there were cases of delivery to the mortuary of living people who were mistakenly diagnosed with death by the doctors. I wanted to show that, as death approached someone alive, the bells would start ringing.

The skull of death was intentionally created to be asymmetrical and angular. We wanted it to resemble with its plasticity primitive clay pots or a figurine of archaic deities, which should enhance the sense of antiquity and to some extent the lost relevance of the hero in the modern environment.

To maximize the expressiveness of each of the characters, I created silhouettes based on simple objects to separate the characters and emphasize their individual traits. Sharp and bony Death, round and clumsy Godzilla, and a broken and unstable Pyromaniac.

The warm color scheme of these scenes contrasts with the main character in order to emphasize the feeling of melting and almost sticky everyday life, the light-filled outskirts are chosen to emphasize the hero's inability to cope with the daily routine, and to further reveal the topic of everyday life.

To create a mood of cold reality in which our heroes live and paranoia that starts because of the inability to cope with their problems, the scenes of anonymous meetings in the hall are made in a noir style. Cold contrasting colors, bright flashes of light are introduced to reveal this idea.
